Captain Munnerlyn coming to Winter Park

The Vikings will bring in free agent defensive tackle Henry Melton for a visit tomorrow, but he won't be the first player to tour Winter Park.

The team will also host free agent cornerback Captain Munnerlyn today and tomorrow according to Master Tesfatsion of the Star Tribune.

Munnerlyn, 25, was originally a seventh round draft pick in 2009 for the Carolina Panthers and emerged as their starting nickel corner. While Munnerlyn is on the shorter side (he is listed at 5 ft. 8 in.), he has become known for making big plays from the inside corner spot.

Munnerlyn has recorded seven interceptions in his career, but what stands out is the fact that he has returned five of those back for touchdowns. In addition, Munnerlyn has five sacks and three forced fumbles in his career, and his ability to make plays in different ways has to be appealing to Mike Zimmer.

Munnerlyn has also made 274 tackles in his career, solid evidence for his ability to help out in run support.

Signing Munnerlyn would fill a huge need for the Vikings, as they struggled to fill the void left by Antoine Winfield last year. While Munnerlyn would technically likely not be considered a starter due to his limitations outside, he would see the field a lot since the Vikings were in their nickel package approximately two-thirds of the time in 2013.

The news was first reported by Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Eyewitness News.

Stay tuned, Vikings fans.
