Joe Berger returns to the Vikings

After making a splash earlier in the first day of free agency, the Vikings made a smaller depth move by resigning offensive lineman Joe Berger to the team.

The move was first reported by Tom Pelissero of USA Today.

Berger was a backup guard and center for the Vikings last year, and pending other transactions he is the teams starter at left guard currently. Berger also contributed on special teams as a protector for punts and field goals.

Berger signed a one year contract with the team according to Master Tesfatsion of the Star Tribune. Other terms of the contract are not available at this time.

Berger will be entering his 10th NFL season and his fourth with the Vikings in 2014. He will likely compete with former rookie Jeff Baca for the starting left guard position.

While Berger is not a splashy move, he provides reliable veteran depth at multiple positions on the offensive line at a bare minimum. If he is asked to be a 16 game starter he will probably not be very successful but he could be a placeholder while the team continues to develop Baca.

According to Andrew Krammer of 1500 ESPN, the Vikings think highly of Baca, so Berger could serve as a bridge on the offensive line in 2014.
