Matt Cassel to Re-Sign with the Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings took care of their top priority in free agency Friday night, as the team has agreed to terms with quarterback Matt Cassel, according to the Star Tribune.

Cassel has received a new two year, $10 million deal according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. The deal has not been announced officially yet by the team, because teams are not allowed to negotiate with their in-house free agents until 3 p.m. tomorrow technically.

Further contract details were not available since the deal is not confirmed yet.

The deal represents a raise for Cassel, who made $3.7 million with the team last year. Cassel voided his contract earlier this offseason in order to find better money on the open market.

The Vikings made it clear that Cassel was the team's top priority in free agency. The Vikings will likely rely on Cassel to mentor a rookie quarterback or serve as a stop-gap starter for the team until the rookie is ready.

Cassel's return helps shore up the quarterback room, as before this deal was announced only Christian Ponder was left on the roster.

It's possible the Vikings will look to shop Ponder now that they have a more reliable option in-house.
