Vikings Sign Derek Cox

There's news out of Winter Park yet again tonight, with yet another cornerback being added to the fold in Minnesota.

Former Chargers cornerback Derek Cox has agreed to sign a one year contract to join the team, multiple sources report.

Cox joins the Vikings just one year after signing a four-year, $20 million contract with San Diego. Cox was considered a nice sleeper signing by the team, but he performed  poorly and was benched while the team was making its last push at the playoffs.

Cox is likely using his year with the Vikings to try to rebuild his value, and then sign another potentially lucrative deal next offseason.

It will interesting to see the terms of the deal, as Cox's play last season likely leaves him with little guarantees. He was likely brought in to compete with some of the younger guys near the bottom of the Vikings roster, and at best could emerge as the teams No. 3 cornerback.

Overall, it's a low-risk, potentially good reward signing for the team, who certainly have nothing to lose by giving Cox another shot. Mike Zimmer seems to pride himself on turning reclamation projects around and we'll see if he can do the same with Cox.

With this signing in addition to bringing in Munnerlyn, the Vikings did a great job shoring up their depth chart and creating competition before the draft in May.

When that happens, the depth chart may look even better.
