Jerome Simpson comes back to the Vikings

Though the Vikings have largely addressed their defense so far this offseason, they're not completely ignoring their offense either.

The Vikings announced Friday afternoon they are re-signing wide receiver Jerome Simpson, in a move that will help bring some depth to Norv Turner's offense.
Simpson was the Vikings second leading receiver last year, with 726 receiving yards, a career best. Though Simpson lost his starting job to Cordarrelle Patterson late in the season last year, his ability to get down the field should be welcomed in Norv Turner's offense.

Though Simpson has had some off the field issues in his NFL career, he likely knows he now has little room for error with a new coaching staff and some younger receivers biting at his heels. It's possible Simpson will be relegated to the fourth receiver spot this year, as Jarius Wright could pass him up on the depth chart next year as well.

General Manager Rick Speilman said on a conference call with reporters that Simpson received a one-year deal with the team.

With Simpson returning to the fold, the Vikings have four wide receivers they should be able to count on as contributors for the 2014 season. The Vikings may still add some depth in the draft, but they could be comfortable standing pat from here on out as well.

Mike Zimmer is actually familiar with Simpson, as he was on the Bengals roster from 2008-2011. Zimmer got to witness firsthand Simpson's famous flip that propelled him to Youtube stardom in 2011.

Zimmer knows what Simpson can do, and he should be a valuable role player in this offense. Of course, Simpson now has to know that role players can be expendable too, so hopefully he stay relatively quiet off the field for a while.
